    Feline’s Return

Natanya’s recent EP, Feline’s Return, is the culmination of the artist’s wide range, embodying a vast variety of genres with just six songs. It plays more like an album than an EP considering its cohesiveness. “Night Freaks” leads the project with dreamy alt-pop vibes and mind-blowing vocals. Her strong yet soft voice carries on consistently throughout, delivering r&b and soul with songs like “Dangerous” and “Guitar.” “Say The Word” delivers a beautiful ballad worth waltzing to as she lets the listener in with her unarmored tenderness. She seamlessly slips from contralto to mezzo-soprano registers and takes the listener through a colorful and joyous ride despite the more complicated experiences she’s able to charismatically narrate in songs like “Moviestar.” The EP perfectly closes with “Daydream,” a very straightforward and heartfelt embracing of vulnerability.

    Evidence of the Talent

Playing Feline’s Return through a dozen times eventually led me to search for the rest of her discography. It was to my surprise that I already heard “Precious Joy” from one of her earlier EPs, Sorrow at Sunrise. Naturally, I had to play her entire catalogue. Her first few projects are so jazzy and her voice matches the tone too well, it’s nearly unrecognizable. If her singing wasn’t still so impeccably clear I would’ve guessed it was another artist entirely on songs like “Evidence” from her first bundled single release, Blue Jay. Progress through her music and travel through the genres and listen to the way she makes each of them her own. Natanya drastically and successfully switches from jazz-inspired tones to r&b and electronic vibes and then to alternative and pop.

    A Voice Like Crystal

Her voice stops you—almost alien-like. Natanya has that rare, crystal tone that somehow transcends whatever fine tuning that would typically take place in a studio. Known for perfect pitch and rhapsodic live performances, she effortlessly sings hauntingly luscious melodies. Singing is just the very beginning of her musicality. She’s an exceptional songwriter and produces her own music. She shows off her many talents as she plays piano, guitar and ukulele. It’s clearly futile to try and box this lady in—not that I’d want to. I’m very excited to watch her continue to soar and thrive in her career.
